In the past I’ve introduced you which were going to be the main protagonists of the epic quest Heroes of Star Ocean will be. The Captain, Blueno, Heero and Anna, among others, will be the great people taking the story forward. Each of them is deep, unique and, in my very biased point of view, an amazing personality.

But they are not alone. In their search and dreams they are antagonized by a group of what I like to call the “bad guys.” These bad guys are also special, as they are not bad or evil in the same way the usual fantasy antagonists are. They also have dreams and values and may even be noble. Yet, they are rivals and are willing to do what it takes to win.

The rivals will be:

Basque – The leader of the crew, he is their source of inspiration and the one who drives them forward. He is not a bad guy per se, but still a terrifying rival for the Captain. He is the oldest of the protagonists, has a lot of honor, and is very tough. He is one the world’s most feared snipers, with an accuracy and power matched by few.

Goras – He is Basque’s right hand man, just as Blueno is for the Captain. He is one of the world’s most renowned magicians and has a power deemed almost legendary. He is the brain behind the rival’s quest and, though not a bad man, is not as honorable as Basque. He wants to succeed in his mission and will do everything he can to build the path to victory.

Mask – The anti-Heero of the story, he is the major antagonist by the end of the novel. He is greatly determined, but powered by the resentment of a terrible past. He wants to rise to the very top of the world and is going to do anything to achieve his goal. He gains one of the temples’ most powerful powers and adds it up to his great skill. He is a young man to be feared and his progress throughout the story is equal or even bigger than Heero’s.

Julia – She is a young and charming girl. She holds some kind of connection with the Captain from before the story’s beginning but she is totally furious at him for something. She wants revenge, but it’s still not her top priority. Once a noble girl, she is corrupted by Mask’s ambition and is going to go all the way with him. As a woman, she builds a strong rivalry with Anna.

Eva – She is a beautiful woman in her early thirties. She is incredibly skilled and owner, also, to one of the amazing powers of the temples. She doesn’t get along well with Mask or Julia and will make them have a hard time if they want to go away from the group’s goals. She might go against her own crew by the end of the novel.

There will be more bad guys coming, that’s for sure. This may even not be the only party of rivals for the Captain and his crew. But, either way, these five are going to be the ones who will pose the biggest obstacles in the quest of our heroes. Again, as with the protagonists, this crew will also have pet dogs, parrots and much more to add a bit of laugh and deepness to the story.

In the past Itold you that Heero, Anna and some of their rivals will be owners of amazing powers. Each of the temples our heroes quest for is home to one elemental power, presented in a form still unknown. These powers meld with the humanness of the characters giving them crafts and skills unique just to them. The individuals who obtain the temple powers will, in one way or the other, have a big advantage against those who don’t.

The extent and deepness of these powers is still unknown, but so far there are thing that are clear and already recognized. Take, for example, in this case, the Power of Wind.

Heero will be, almost from the very beginning of the novel, in possesion of this unique skill. The power of wind, originating from the Sky Temple, is hard to manage, to use and presents big challenges to those who want to use it to its biggest extent. But with this said, it’s a legendary force when truly mastered.

The features the Power of Wind has, among others, include:

• Heero uses his hands to make wind gusts and powerful wind attacks. As the story progresses he learns to use his feet and then it takes him only a wink or small blow to unleash an attack of terrific force. At his highest level, Heero can control winds with his mind and make them go with the force they want and in the direction he wants them to.
• He gains supernatural speed, becoming the world’s fastest man. He achieves lightning-fast reflexes and gains a unique dexterity. He struggles along the way and takes him time to master and progress with this, but as he gains control he becomes more and more powerful.
• First, Heero can levitate a few inches. Then, with practice and a lot of hard work he learns to fly. By the end of the novel he can fly so fast and has such reflexes that make him almost unbeatable in the open air.
• Heero learns to make a force shield out of wind that is able to protect him from ballistic attacks and more. If the shield does not fully disable the attacks, it weakens them severely.
• The Power’s depth is still unknown and perhaps it never will. It’s up to Heero to use it in imaginative ways and achieve new breakthroughs in combat and in life. For example, he learns to make illusions out of air and he can, after developing a technique, spend a lot of time underwater without having to breath back.
• At one point, long into the story, he can start controlling the weather too. He melds with it, he becomes one with the air and summons storms, hurricanes and can even control electromagnetic powers.

As all great powers, the Power of Wind also gives Heero a few weaknesses. These are small compared to the possibilities opened, but may still pose a serious threat to Heero later in the story. These weaknesses include:

• He is weak in closed spaces, as he can’t use his powers to a great extent. He will have trouble inside of big buildings or in the depths of the Underdark.
• The powers fatigue him perhaps way too fast. The powers demand a lot of energy and commitment from his body and many times he can’t just cope with it. He gains stamina and learns to control the powers more easily, but still has a lot of problems when he uses them continuously and for a long time.
• There is an Anti Power that brings balance to the Elements. In this case, the Anti Power is the Power of Earth, which may possibly end up in the hands of one of Heero’s bitterest rivals.

Heroes of Star Ocean will be the greatest and most epic fantasy story ever told. I’ve been thinking about the story and some of the characters for more than five years now. That’s a long time, so I want to get in the move and, if possible, have a first draft of the whole thing by the time 2010 ends.

Right here you’ll find a few notes of what the main characters will be like, their names and a bit about their story. Most of HSO’s plot will go around two parties – the good guys and the bad guys, both traveling around the world in search for the lost temples and the powers hidden inside them. The idea is to see the characters (both good and bad) grow, interact and see how their views of the world and of life keep changing and clashing along the way.

The main guys will be:

The Captain – Captain is the leader of the good guys and the main protagonist of the novel at least half way through. He is a 40-45 years old swordsman, full of wisdom and power, with great determination and with very strong fighting skills. As leader of the party he brings inspiration and the clarity to the group. He flaws on being unorganized and, sometimes, on just being way too noble. He will symbolize, along with his archenemy Basque Gran, the old world, with its values and its subsequent decadence.

Blueno – Blueno is the Captain’s right hand and his best man. He is a big 40 year old man with crazy strength. He is a tough drinker, a big laugh and a man that always gives good feelings to the people. He has overwhelming presence and might be really stubborn sometimes. On the ship, despite the Captain is the leader per se, it is Blueno who has the voice of command and the most respect, perhaps because of his condition as the party’s shipwright. Blueno’s weapon of choice is a single long sword.

Heero – Heero will take Captain’s relay as protagonist in the late part of the novel. He is young, in his early twenties and in search for adventures. He is a gifted rogue-fighter, using double scimitars and, as the story progresses, one of the amazing powers the temples give. He symbolizes growth, dreams and the overcoming of adversities. He is romantic, charismatic but very cold with his enemies and with those he doesn’t like. He loves the Captain, his inspiration, and continuously wants to learn from him.

Vann – Vann is a heroism, friendship and trust. He is slightly older than Heero and his long time best friend. He means a lot to the team, for he is a man of great feelings, the one everyone can trust and who is always open to speak his emotions out. He brings joy to the party being the ship’s musician and is a very strong fighter too.

Anna – Anna is the light who helps Heero and Vann find the way and overcome their difficulties. She is young, very smart, passionate about old cultures, deep and also very sensible. She brings comfort and love to a party full of ambitious men. She is the ship’s archaeologist and the first one to discover the amazing secrets and puzzles the temples have. She is not good in battle, but that changes after she obtains one of the temples’ mightiest powers.

Penny – Penny is the ship’s navigator, a beautiful yet strong woman in her early thirties. She is sensual, fast and her presence makes the group more united. She fights long distance and is one of the world’s most feared snipers. As Blueno, she is a tough drinker and they both share great moments together, as well as unique friendship. Of all the crew, she is the most renowned and has a reputation of using her sensuality to get what she wants.

Manos – Manos, bearer of a great moustache, is the ship’s cook as well as its most funny personality. He joins the party later in the novel and brings joy and happiness to the ship after a tough moment. He symbolizes liberty and is an amazing wizard. He is eternally grateful to the Captain and the team and is willing to go all the way with them.

Navi – Navi is a shy girl in a group of noisy people who love speaking. She is tidy, timely and very organized. Of course, after a few days on the ship she is slowly corrupted into a drinking, noisy and funny girl too. She acts as the ship’s and party’s doctor and is always happy of having joined the ship.

These are the main characters in the good guys group who have already been planned. The idea is that by the end of the novel the party has one or two more characters, but we’ll see how that turns out as perhaps that would make the novel way too long.

Of course, there will be pets on the ship too. A couple of parrots, dogs and some more animals will be on the ship, adding love, funny moments and flavor to the group. Still have to plan them – but each of these will have their unique looks and personalities too.
