Hi Rosemary, what I suggest you for the first case is to take a sheet of paper with 5-10 phrases or sentences. Say those and then you'll keep going - it will help you get your nerves right. And the hearing defect is not a big deal - you can find a lot of people to practice in quiet places: parks, small meet ups, etc. Don't think about these contrains, think about all what you know and how much you want to practice it =)

My problem is that I have trouble starting a conversation. I can sit next to a Spanish speaker in a fast food place and be afraid to ask if I can practice my Spanish. If I do then I go blank and cannot think of anything to say.

It also doesn't help that I have a hearing defect in noisy places.

Any suggestions?

Let in be known that I wrote this before I discovered you Benny =P! You showed me it's possible to be really hardcore with this.

Actually I've an almost-done update of this guide waiting in the closet... New insights and lessons, ideas, more resources, etc. Soon, soon! But anyway, just as you say, the speaking part is what really matters. After all, it was not until I started going out and speaking in German like crazy that all what I had studied made sense.

I'm going to experiment new ideas (many of yours!) once I move to Denmark (in one month or so) and set in my quest to become one real Viking jaja

I wrote a post <a href="http://www.fluentin3months.com/how-to-speak-a-language-pretty-well-starting-from-scratch-in-just-two-months/" rel="nofollow">similar to this</a> a while back. Worked to help me speak pretty good Czech in 2 months.
Although I'd personally put way more emphasis on what you mentioned at the end and speak with natives. Any vocabulary strategies etc. only work when they have the right context to be applied in. Pressure from natives is the best and is easy to come across nowadays thanks to international cities and the Internet ;)
